How Writing a Book Made Rick Warren

How writing a book made Rick Warren one of the most trusted pastors in the nation.

Writing a book made Rick Warren one of the most trusted spiritual leaders in America. Here’s how.

Rick Warren is a well-known Christian minister.  He is also a well-known author.  It is safe to say that he is a well-known pastor because he is a well-known author.  A little-known fact is that Rick Warren began writing books while he was still in Seminary– before he became a pastor.

Rick Warren may be an excellent minister, but he is not necessarily the best in America.  He is, however, one of the most powerful and well-known ministers in the country because of the popularity of his books.  When anyone has a book published they gain recognition, credibility, and influence.  His book, The Purpose Driven Life, is his top-selling book.  It has sold over 30 million copies.

Most people attribute the success of this book to the quality of the information it contains, but it is important to note that Rick Warren used very powerful and unique marketing to get his book to sell. Before its publication, Rick Warren invested thousands of dollars to give out thousands of copies to churches around the country encouraging pastors to lead their churches on a study of the book. The result was millions of book sales as church groups began book studies all over the country. As more and more groups discussed what they were learning, more and more churches got interested and began their own studies. A phenomenon was born–an intentional phenomenon–a well-crafted and well-marketed movement of people to buy a book.

The success of the book sales pushed Warren into the national spotlight. Because of his book’s success:

Warren has been invited to speak at national and international forums, including the United Nations, the World Economic Forum in Davos, the African Union, the Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, TED, and Time’s Global Health Summit. He was an elected member of the Council on Foreign Relations between 2005 and 2006, and was named one of “America’s Top 25 Leaders” in the October 31, 2005, issue of U.S. News and World Report.Warren was named by Time magazine as one of “15 World Leaders Who Mattered Most in 2004” and one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” (2005).In 2006 Newsweek called him one of “15 People Who Make America Great.” –Wikipedia

Whether or not you agree with Rick Warren’s ideas or beliefs, it’s clear to see the benefits and influence he has gained from writing his book.  What makes him different from you? Perhaps nothing more than the decision to write a book.

It is not known whether Rick Warren used a ghostwriter on Purpose Driven Life because ghostwriters do not receive credit. But either way, he most certainly (like all authors) worked closely with an editor who may or may not have also been a ghostwriter. By hiring a ghostwriter, you too can achieve the goal of seeing your book for sale around the world. Who knows what doors of influence and opportunity may open for you when you do?
